Cookie Policy
This page explains the cookies netnarrator.co.za uses, what each one does and how you can say no to them. Net Narrator is run by Joshua Brouard in Durban, so when it says “I” or “me”, that’s Joshua.
Last updated: 11 October 2026. For how I handle personal information more generally, see the Privacy Policy.
The short version
- The site works fully without any optional cookies.
- Statistics cookies from Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity are switched on when you arrive, and the cookie banner lets you decline them. If you’re visiting from the European Union, the UK or Switzerland, they stay off until you click “Accept”.
- There are no advertising cookies here, and nothing that follows you around other websites.
- You can change your mind whenever you like, using the button below.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website saves in your browser. Some are needed for a site to work safely. Others help the site owner understand how people use it, which pages are useful and where visitors get stuck.
Similar tools, like your browser’s local storage, work in much the same way. Where this site uses one, it’s listed below too.
Cookies this site uses
Always on: keeping the site secure
These can’t be switched off because the site relies on them. They don’t identify you, and they aren’t used for statistics or marketing.
| Cookie | Set by | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
__cf_bm | Cloudflare | Helps tell real visitors apart from bots, which protects the site from spam and attacks. | 30 minutes |
Your cookie choice itself is saved in your browser’s local storage under nn_consent, so the banner doesn’t keep popping up. It stays for 12 months, after which the banner shows again.
Statistics: on unless you decline
These help me see which pages people read, how they find the site and where the site could be clearer. I use what I learn to improve the site, never to sell to you or anyone else. I rely on my legitimate interest in understanding and improving the site, which is one of the grounds South Africa’s privacy law (POPIA) provides. You can object at any time by declining.
| Cookie | Set by | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics | Tells visits apart so I can count how many people use the site. | 2 years |
_ga_ followed by an ID | Google Analytics | Keeps track of your current visit, such as which pages you viewed. | 2 years |
_clck | Microsoft Clarity | Recognises you as the same visitor on a return visit. | 1 year |
_clsk | Microsoft Clarity | Groups the pages you view in one visit into a single session. | 1 day |
CLID | Microsoft Clarity | Recognises a returning visitor across sites that use Clarity. | 1 year |
MUID | Microsoft | Microsoft’s own identifier, set when Clarity loads. | 1 year |
Microsoft Clarity records how people scroll, click and move around a page, shown to me as heatmaps and anonymised replays. It hides text you type into forms, so I never see what you enter.
If you decline, the statistics cookies above are deleted. Google Analytics still runs but in a cookieless mode. It sends Google basic, anonymous signals (such as a page being viewed) without saving cookies or identifying you. Clarity is switched off and doesn’t load on the pages you visit next.
Only for people who log in to manage the site
WordPress sets login cookies (their names start with wordpress_ or wp-) when someone signs in to the admin area. That’s only me, so as a visitor you won’t get these.
What this site doesn’t use
There are no advertising or retargeting cookies, no Facebook pixel and no tracking for anyone else’s marketing. If that ever changes, I’ll update this page and ask for your permission first.
Changes to this policy
If I add or remove a tool, I’ll update the lists above and change the date at the top of the page.
Your choices
You can decline statistics cookies on the banner the first time you visit. To change your answer later, use this button and the banner will open again.
Blocking cookies in your browser
Every browser lets you see, delete and block cookies. These guides show how:
Blocking every cookie can stop parts of some websites working, though this one will still work fine.
You can also stop Google Analytics on every website you visit with Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
