North Coast
SEO for Small & Medium-Sized Businesses on Durban’s North Coast with a free first chat
From the office towers on Umhlanga Ridge to family businesses in Durban North, the North Coast is one of the busiest places to do business in KwaZulu-Natal. I help small and medium-sized businesses here show up when local customers search.

Introduction
A quick hello from me
You’ll deal with me directly, so here’s a short video to say hello and show you the easiest ways to get in touch.
The area
Doing business on the North Coast
The North Coast has changed quickly. Umhlanga grew from a beach village into Greater Durban’s main business district after Gateway opened in 2001, and King Shaka International Airport arrived in La Mercy in 2010. Companies like Unilever and Aspen Pharmacare now have head offices around La Lucia Ridge.
Plenty of smaller businesses keep the area running too. There are restaurants and guesthouses near the beachfront, accountants and lawyers in the office parks, and trades and home services working across Durban North and the estates around Mount Edgecombe. Cornubia is adding new shops, homes and warehouses every year.
All of that makes the North Coast a competitive place to be found online. In Umhlanga especially, you’re up against well-funded businesses and agencies that have been doing SEO for years. In newer areas like Cornubia and La Mercy, there’s often more room to stand out if you move early.
Suburbs I cover on the North Coast
Every suburb has its own mix of businesses and competition. Choose yours to see how local SEO works there.
Umhlanga
Two areas in one: the Ridge, with its office blocks and Gateway, and the Rocks, where hotels, restaurants and tourism lead. Expect plenty of competition in search here.
La Lucia
An upmarket residential suburb with La Lucia Mall and the La Lucia Ridge Office Estate on its doorstep, which makes it a strong area for professional services.
Mount Edgecombe
Long the centre of South Africa’s sugar industry, now a mix of golf estates, logistics and light industry, right next door to Cornubia.
Cornubia
A new mixed-use city that’s still being built, with Cornubia Mall, thousands of homes and land set aside for warehousing. Many businesses here are new, and so is their competition online.
La Mercy
Home to King Shaka International Airport and Dube TradePort, with a small coastal village alongside. A natural fit for travel, logistics and trade businesses.
Durban North
An established residential area between the Umgeni River and Umhlanga, with Broadway as its commercial hub. Good territory for local services, practices and neighbourhood shops.
My approach
How I’d approach SEO on the North Coast
The basics don’t change from suburb to suburb, but the amount of work it takes does.
- Match the effort to the suburb. Ranking in Umhlanga takes more work than ranking in Cornubia or La Mercy. I’ll tell you upfront how competitive your part of the North Coast is and what that means for timelines.
- Get your Google Business Profile working. For most local businesses, the map results matter as much as the regular ones. A complete, active profile with genuine reviews is often the quickest win.
- Build pages for the places you serve. If you work across several suburbs, a useful page for each gives Google a clear reason to show you there, as long as each page says something real about that area.
- Earn local mentions. Links and mentions from other North Coast businesses, directories and community sites help show Google that you’re part of the area.

Recent results
SEO results from a Durban client
Results depend on your business and your competition, so I won’t promise rankings. Here’s what one local client has seen so far.
Duguza Pest Control is a family-run Durban business. Within about eleven weeks of their new website going live, it was ranking for 29 search terms on Google and being quoted in Google’s AI Overviews.
Which parts of the North Coast do you cover?
Umhlanga, La Lucia, Mount Edgecombe, Cornubia, La Mercy and Durban North. If you’re based nearby and not sure whether you’re in my area, just ask.
Is SEO harder in Umhlanga than elsewhere on the North Coast?
Usually, yes. Umhlanga has more businesses competing for the same searches, and many of them have been investing in SEO for a long time. That doesn’t put it out of reach, but it does mean results tend to take longer and need a steadier effort.
Do I need a separate page for every suburb I serve?
Only for the suburbs you genuinely work in and can say something useful about. A handful of strong, specific pages will do far more for you than dozens of copies with the suburb name swapped.
Can we meet in person?
Yes. I’m happy to come to you anywhere on the North Coast, or we can talk on a video call or over the phone if that’s easier.
How long will it take to see results?
It depends on where you’re starting and how competitive your area is. On an existing website, some fixes can show movement within a few weeks. Competitive searches in places like Umhlanga can take several months of consistent work.
Other areas I cover
I work with businesses right across Durban and its surrounds.
