Hi, Joshua here. In this article I talk about how much SEO costs in South Africa. This is what I know. Prices vary a lot. You’ll see a few thousand rand a month for basic local work, and anywhere from 20 to 40 thousand rand and up for competitive national campaigns. Be careful with very cheap SEO. There usually isn’t enough budget to do the work properly, so corners get cut, and some of those shortcuts can hurt your website. If anyone guarantees you the number one spot, walk away. Most small Durban businesses don’t need a big national campaign anyway. A good website, a strong Google profile and steady content can go a long way. That’s why I chat to you first and then give you a clear quote. If you’d like to learn more, keep reading.

In short

  • SEO prices in South Africa vary hugely, from a few thousand rand a month to R30,000+ for competitive campaigns.
  • Price depends on your competition, your website’s current state, how many areas you target and how much work is included.
  • Most SEO is charged as a monthly retainer, but once-off audits and projects are common too.
  • Very cheap SEO is often a false economy, and nobody can guarantee rankings.
  • I don’t publish set prices. We chat first, then you get a clear quote.

SEO cost in South Africa varies enormously. Publicly listed agency prices range from a few thousand rand a month for basic local work to R30,000 or more for competitive national campaigns. What you’ll actually pay depends on your industry, your competition, the state of your website and how much work is needed, which is why I always talk to a business before quoting.

It’s probably the first question most business owners have, and a fair one. I’ll give you the honest answer, including the ranges you’ll see online, why they vary so much, and why I prefer to talk before quoting.

The short answer: it really depends

Look at South African agencies that publish their prices and you’ll see entry-level local SEO from a few thousand rand a month, mid-range retainers around R8,000 to R20,000, and competitive or national campaigns from R20,000 to R40,000 and up. These are broad ranges, and they vary enormously.

A local plumber in Phoenix and a multi-branch business chasing all of Durban need very different amounts of work, so a price that’s right for one is wrong for the other.

How SEO companies in South Africa charge

  • Monthly retainers: the most common. You pay a set amount each month for ongoing work.
  • Once-off projects: like an SEO audit, a website build or a technical clean-up.
  • Hourly rates: sometimes used for consulting or smaller pieces of work.

What you get at different price points

Lower budgets usually cover the basics: your Google Business Profile, some on-page fixes and a simple monthly report. Mid-range budgets add regular content, technical work and some link building. Higher budgets cover more areas, more content, more outreach and more detailed reporting. Always ask for a written list of what you get each month.

What does a small Durban business usually need?

Most small local businesses don’t need a big national campaign. They need a well-built website, a strong Google Business Profile, local citations, reviews and steady, focused content. If your industry isn’t very competitive, a modest, consistent effort can go a long way.

Why is SEO so expensive?

Because good SEO is skilled work that takes time: research, writing, technical fixes, outreach and reporting, month after month. You’re paying for hours and expertise. The upside is that, unlike ads, the results keep working after the work is done.

Cheap SEO: what’s the catch?

Very cheap SEO often can’t buy enough time to do the work properly, so corners get cut: bought links, thin content or automated work. Some of those tactics break Google’s spam policies and can do more harm than good. Fixing it later often costs more than you saved.

Monthly retainer or once-off project?

If you need ongoing growth, a retainer makes sense, because SEO compounds over time. If you just need to know what’s wrong, a once-off audit with clear recommendations can be a great starting point. You can act on it yourself, pass it to your developer, or bring someone in later.

Red flags to watch for before you sign

  • guaranteed rankings or a guaranteed number one spot: Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking
  • no clear list of what you get each month
  • long lock-in contracts before you’ve seen any work
  • reports that only show rankings for terms nobody searches for
  • a price quoted before anyone has looked at your website or competitors

How does SEO compare to paying for Google Ads?

Ads work from day one, but they cost money for as long as they run and stop when you stop paying. SEO takes longer, but the pages you build keep bringing in enquiries. For a new business, using both makes sense: ads for quick results, SEO for the long term.

How much should you budget?

Let your market guide the number. Look at how many competitors you have, how hard they’re working on SEO and how much a new customer is worth to you. Remember that VAT is 15% in South Africa, so check whether a quoted price includes it.

Can you do some of it yourself?

Yes. Setting up your Google Business Profile, asking for reviews and listing on directories are all things you can do. Where help pays off is the technical side, the strategy and knowing what to do first. How to get found on Google covers the basics.

How do you know if it’s worth the money?

Judge it by the enquiries it brings in. In a report commissioned by Google, Public First found that South African local businesses get 20% to 30% of their new customers through Google Search. If SEO brings you even a few extra customers a month, it can more than pay for itself. Google says SEO usually takes four months to a year to show its full benefit, so judge it over that kind of timeframe. More in how long SEO takes to work.

Questions to ask any SEO provider before you pay

  • What exactly will you do each month?
  • How will you report on progress, and what will the report show?
  • What results should I expect, and in what timeframe?
  • Is there a contract, and how long is it?
  • Is the price including VAT?

Why I don’t publish set prices

It depends on what your business needs, how competitive your industry is and how long the work runs for. So instead of set packages, we chat first. I go away, do my research and come back with a clear quote that spells out the work. If SEO isn’t the right fit for you right now, that’s where I’ll tell you.

Questions Durban business owners ask about SEO pricing

Is SEO a once-off cost?

It can be, for things like an audit or a website build. But ongoing SEO usually works best as regular monthly work, because rankings build over time.

Do quoted prices include VAT?

Not always. Many quotes exclude VAT. Ask before you sign.

Do I have to sign a long contract?

Not always. Ask about minimum terms upfront, and be wary of long lock-ins before you’ve seen any work.

What should a monthly SEO report show?

What was done that month, plus progress you can check yourself, like impressions, clicks and enquiries in Google Search Console and your analytics, alongside rankings.
